Storm shelters in Yukon, OK
Yukon, in Canadian County, publishes written storm shelter rules and requires every shelter to be registered.
Permits in Yukon
- The storm shelter permit fee is $45, plus a $4 state fee and a $0.50 city collection fee (Yukon Residential Building Permits).
- The application needs a drawing signed and sealed by a licensed Oklahoma engineer and a copy of the installer contract. The permit must be posted where it is visible from the street (Yukon Storm Shelter Requirements PDF).
- Shelters must meet zoning setbacks, cannot sit in utility easements, and need at least 5 ft (more for deeper units) from the house foundation. Shelters visible from the street must be landscaped within 30 days, and dirt removed within 5 business days (same source).
- Apply online via the Yukon citizen portal. Questions: 405-354-6676.
Register your shelter
- Yukon's requirements say all storm shelters must be registered with the city. Use the free Storm Shelter Registry form, run by Development Services Stormwater/GIS.
Tip: Yukon's 5 ft foundation rule matters for outdoor units; garage in-ground shelters avoid most yard rules.
