Mustang risk and housing, by the numbers
NWS Norman counts 113 tornadoes in Canadian County from 1950 through 2025, the second most among the counties around Oklahoma City (NWS Norman tornado counts by county, 1950-2025). The same office describes the May 31, 2013 El Reno tornado, a few miles west of Mustang, as the widest tornado known on record (NWS Norman: May 31, 2013 tornadoes and flash flooding).
Mustang's housing is mostly newer and owner-occupied: about 8,481 units, a median year built of 1992, roughly 40% built in 2000 or later, 88% single-family detached and 76% owner-occupied (Census ACS 2020-2024 for Mustang, via Census Reporter). Newer homes often have attached garages on slabs, which is usually where a garage in-ground shelter usually goes. If you rent, ask the owner in writing before any shelter work.
Never plan to ride out a storm under a highway overpass. NWS Norman reports that people sheltering under overpasses were killed in the May 3, 1999 outbreak (NWS Norman: May 3, 1999 tornado outbreak).
