How to register your storm shelter in Oklahoma City
Oklahoma City runs a free, voluntary registry so police, fire and EMS know where to look for shelters after a tornado.
Who can register
Only shelters inside Oklahoma City limits (OKC Storm Shelter Registry). Suburbs like Moore, Norman or Edmond are not covered by this registry; ask your own city or county emergency management office.
Why register
The registry is used by first responders to know where shelters are after a storm (OKC Storm Shelter Registry). Registration is free and voluntary.
Shortcuts
- When you apply for the permit, you can ask in the remarks section to have the shelter registered automatically (City of OKC Storm Shelter Permit page).
- Trouble or updates: Action Center, (405) 297-2535, weekdays 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. (OKC Storm Shelter Registry).
What the form asks for
The online form needs four things (OKC Storm Shelter Registry):
- Your Oklahoma City street address
- The type of shelter you have
- Where it sits on the property, such as the garage floor or the backyard
- Whether it is a residential or commercial shelter
You may also add an emergency contact name and phone number. That part is optional and not needed to complete the registration.
Already registered?
The registry site lets you look up an address to see whether a shelter there is already on file. This is worth doing if you bought a home that came with a shelter, since a past owner or the installer may have registered it (OKC Storm Shelter Registry).
Keeping your entry current
If you move the shelter, replace it, or change the emergency contact, call the Action Center to update the record. The same number helps if the online form will not accept your address (OKC Storm Shelter Registry).
How responders use it
The city says police, fire and EMS use the information only to help with emergency response if a tornado or other disaster hits your home or neighborhood (OKC Storm Shelter Registry).
Timing
The city lists registration as the step after a shelter is paid for, installed and inspected (City of OKC Storm Shelter Permit page). Permit fees and paperwork are on our permits page.
