Why older Midwest City homes need a plan
Oklahoma County, which includes Midwest City, has the most recorded tornadoes of any Oklahoma county, 138 from 1950 through 2025 (NWS Norman tornado counts by county, 1950-2025). The May 3, 1999 tornado tracked through Del City and on into Midwest City (NWS Norman: May 3, 1999 tornado outbreak).
Census estimates put Midwest City's median year built at 1975, with about 60% of its 27,117 homes built before 1980 and about 42% renter-occupied (Census ACS 2020-2024 for Midwest City, via Census Reporter). With that many older homes, ask any installer to check the condition of the garage slab before cutting it for a shelter.
