Storm shelter registries across the OKC metro

After a tornado, firefighters and police check registered shelters for people who may be trapped. Registration is free in every city we checked, but each city or county keeps its own list, so registering with Oklahoma City does nothing for a shelter in Moore. Here are the official registry pages. Checked November 2, 2026.

Sources are the linked city and county pages. Oklahoma City's registry covers shelters inside city limits only (OKC Storm Shelter Registry), and Moore's permit application collects shelter registration details on the same form (City of Moore shelter permit application). If your town is not listed, call your city hall or county emergency management office.

When to register

Oklahoma City lists registration as the step after the shelter is paid for, installed and inspected, and you can ask for automatic registration in the remarks section of the permit application (City of OKC Storm Shelter Permit page). If you bought a home with a shelter, register it in your name even if a past owner did, and update the record if you replace or move it. Our OKC registry walkthrough covers that form step by step.

What to have ready

Most forms ask for the street address, the shelter type (garage floor, outdoor cellar, above-ground room), where it sits on the lot, and an emergency contact (OKC Storm Shelter Registry). Cleveland County's form also lets you enter the shelter's latitude and longitude (Cleveland County registry form).

Do not skip the property tax exemption

Registration with first responders is separate from taxes. The Oklahoma Constitution exempts up to 100 square feet of a storm shelter added after January 1, 2002 from property tax. You claim it on Form OTC 905, filed with your county assessor, and the exemption ends when the property is sold (2026 Form 905, Cleveland County Assessor). Oklahoma County and Canadian County homeowners file the same form with their own assessor.
